The Birth of Vista
Windows Vista, initially codenamed "Longhorn", began development in 2001 shortly after the release of Windows XP. Microsoft aimed to create a revolutionary operating system with enhanced security, a completely new user interface, and improved multimedia capabilities.
Fun Fact: The Name Game
Before settling on "Vista", Microsoft considered names like "Windows Seven" (though it was version 6.0), "Windows.next", and even "Windows XP Reloaded". The name "Vista" was chosen to represent a new "view" or perspective on personal computing.
Development was notoriously troubled, with major features being cut or delayed. The "Longhorn" reset in 2004 meant Microsoft essentially started over, building Vista on the more stable Windows Server 2003 codebase rather than the original Longhorn builds.
